Irene Deftereos
Irene Deftereos is a senior dietitian at Western Health, where she leads the surgical nutrition service and Upper GI clinic. In addition to clinical work, Irene has worked as clinical research fellow for The Department of Surgery at The University of Melbourne, undertaking research into cancer related malnutrition and sarcopenia. In 2022, Irene completed her PhD at The University of Melbourne, which investigated current evidence and practices for optimising the nutritional status and outcomes of patients undergoing resection for upper gastrointestinal cancer. Irene is passionate about the role of the dietitian within the multidisciplinary team to improve the outcomes of people undergoing gastrointestinal surgery.
